A blanket ban on the production, supply and importation of new psychoactive substances (NPS), previously known as ‘legal highs’, was introduced in May 2016. Therefore the production, selling or use of them is now illegal.

The term ‘legal highs’ may have misled people and given them the impression the substances were safe. But there are serious health risks and young and vulnerable people are risking their lives.

There is a growing amount of evidence that they can cause considerable harm, and research has shown that a proportion of these products actually contain controlled Class A and B drugs.
