Police launch major raid series in Birmingham targeting drugs and guns

More than 100 police officers today launched a major series of raids targeting drug and gun crime in Birmingham.

Firearms officers and the dog unit were among those targeting two gangs of suspected dealers as part of an investigation into violent attacks.

Officers raided eight premises in Alum Rock and searched four vehicles; as a result, three men were arrested on suspicion of drug offences and remain in police custody.

Searches continue but drugs, drug paraphernalia and money as well as three machetes and a hunting knife have already been recovered.

Local neighbourhood team, detectives, force support unit, firearms officers and the drones team all took part in today’s action, which has been weeks in the planning. 

As well as drugs and gun crime, officers are investigating money laundering, people trafficking and child sexual exploitation offences.

Inspector Matt Crowley said: “Today’s decisive action should let the community know that we will act against crime in our communities.

“Those who think they can sell drugs, use violence and exploit the vulnerable should be under no illusion that we are on to them and we will systematically dismantle their operations using all the resources we have available to us.

“Our work today has been very well received by the local residents, who told us they appreciated the action being taken.
