Police chase stolen HGV through Sandwell

A man from Tipton has been arrested after police pursued a stolen HGV lorry through parts of Sandwell last night (25 January).

The lorry, which was reported stolen in Staffordshire, triggered an ANPR camera in Smethwick at 11.40pm.

West Midlands Police units were deployed and signalled the driver to stop, but the lorry carried on.

Officers pursued it through Smethwick, West Bromwich, Horseley Heath and Oldbury.

The vehicle was driven dangerously reaching speeds of up to 55mph in a 30mph zone and smashed through bollards, before being dumped on Farm Road, Oldbury.

A police helicopter was scrambled in search of the suspected thief who'd got out of the vehicle and eventually caught up with him on Coterills Road, Tipton.

The 44-year-old-man was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and dangerous driving. He remains in custody this morning.
