A hit-and-run driver who ploughed into and killed a pedestrian while speeding in Walsall has been jailed for six years.

Stefan Gvozdenovic was travelling at more than 65 mph when he hit Carl Moore who was crossing High Street, Walsall Wood, around 12.30am on 24 November last year.

Mr Moore, aged 28, suffered serious head injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital.

Gvozdenovic, of Lane Avenue, Walsall, made off in the Range Rover he was driving after the collision and then dumped it. He handed himself into police seven hours later.

The 33-year-old was already on bail accused of dangerous driving after failing to stop for police just a month earlier.

Tests following the fatal collision on 24 November found traces of cocaine in his blood.

He admitted causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday (6 February). He was also banned from driving for 14 years.

Sergeant Alan Hands, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This was incredibly irresponsible and reckless driving which led to the sad death of Mr Moore.

"He was unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time; and although it will never stop the pain for his family we hope the sentencing of Gvozdenovic will provide some sense of justice."
