Distracted driver jailed after fatal collision in Erdington

A delivery driver has been jailed after hitting and killing a woman while he lit a cigarette in Erdington.

Distracted Tomas Marcinkus struck 35-year-old Clair McKenzie while driving along Sutton New Road in the early hours of 11 November 2016.

The victim, who was on the ground at the time, suffered serious head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Marcinkus, aged 29 from Wolverhampton, left the scene but he was quickly identified following an investigation from the Collision Investigation Unit (CIU) and arrested a few days later.

He admitted death by careless driving at an earlier hearing and was jailed for 12 months at Birmingham Crown Court today (Friday 12 January).

Marcinkus - who said he had not realised there was a person on the road - was also banned from driving for two-and-a-half years.
