Appeal for information after man’s body found in canal

We’re appealing for witnesses after a man’s body was found floating in a Birmingham canal this morning (15 Feb).

A member of the public spotted the body in water off Masshouse Lane, Kings Norton, at 8.40am and alerted the emergency services.

The person has yet to be formally identified but it is believed to be that of a man in his 40s who lived locally.

At this stage the cause of death is unclear but a post mortem examination has been set for tomorrow morning in a bid to throw more light on what has happened.

The man was wearing a blue coat and a rucksack across his chest when he was recovered.

We’re appealing for anyone who saw a man matching the description in the area between 7.30pm last night and 8.40am this morning to get in touch.

Detective Chief Inspector Scott Griffiths, said: “We believe the man would have accessed the canal towpath via either Masshouse Lane or Shannon Road − and that he would have entered the water in that area.

“If anyone believes they saw the man I’d urge them to get in touch."
