Operational Support Unit


The Operational Support Unit (OSU) is a uniformed department, made up of officers with a wide range of specialist skills. The OSU police spontaneous or pre-planned major incidents and have three core roles:

  • Keeping public order.
  • Providing nationally qualified search officers.
  • Specialists in safe entry to buildings.

With OSU teams based across the force, officers can be used for other skills which include:

  • Under water search.
  • Chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear trained officers.
  • Victim recovery.
  • Working at heights.
  • Counter terrorism unit support.
  • Supporting officers with local operations aimed at reducing crime and making communities feel safer.
