Time for our #WMPfamily to grow
West Midlands Police is staging its largest recruitment drive in years, as the force seeks to build on a national campaign intended to attract thousands of potential applicants to consider a police career.
The campaign has been launched by the Home Office today, encouraging people to ‘Be a force for all’.
The national recruitment drive follows the Prime Minister’s commitment to increase police numbers over the next three years.
Four WMP officers feature in the national advertising campaign, with their voices featuring in radio adverts that will run across stations up and down the country, including Heart Radio and Capital Radio in the West Midlands. Digital billboards will also be seen at prime sites in Birmingham and Coventry city centres, such as New Street Station.
The WMP recruitment drive began in March 2019 and this week saw the 4000th application submitted to become a new police officer.
However, the overall figure rises considerably when added to the number of officers set to be recruited to replace those expected to leave the force, mostly through retirement.
While the West Midlands’ share of the 20,000 new officers is yet to be announced, the national programme will see the region’s police numbers rise further over coming years.
DCC Louisa Rolfe is optimistic about the future. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the WMP family to grow. It presents us with a huge task, in attracting and recruiting so many people, but it is one we very much welcome,” she said.
“Here in the West Midlands we have a fantastically diverse region to protect and serve. Policing here offers a huge range of opportunities. Our officers are at the heart of vibrant communities as well as providing really specialist skills when investigating crime and supporting the most vulnerable. We are an urban, busy, metropolitan force and see all of the rewarding – and challenging – sides of policing that come with the territory.
“Policing is such a unique career that can take you on so many different paths. We all do it because we love making a difference, and hopefully that’s what will appeal to so many others out there who may be colleagues of the future.”
Police and Crime Commissioner for the West Midlands, David Jamieson, added: “West Midlands Police stands ready to recruit more officers.
“This is a great opportunity to help make the force look more like the communities it serves and improve our ability to tackle crime. Earlier this year I announced police officer would increase by 200 over the next two years, funded by efficiencies driven through our modernisation programme. I am continuing to press the government to ensure that the West Midlands receives its share of the 20,000 officers so we can increase numbers further.”
August saw WMP break long-held records for the percentage of candidates successful in the police officer assessment process and this month sees over 200 applicants go through the same assessments, which is the largest number in one session ever seen by WMP.
