Reality check

For a small number of people carrying a gun, or living in fear of gun crime is an everyday reality.

Whilst gun crime in the West Midlands is still at low levels, this gives no comfort to those who see guns being carried and used in their communities.

A partnership approach

Crimes where firearms were known to be involved formed a very small proportion of total crime, representing 0.7 per cent of overall crime during 2006/07.

There were 974 crimes where firearms were known to be involved across the force area.  The force intelligence department has pioneered ground-breaking ways to help people affected by gun and gang culture, working with community leaders and mediators to deter the use of firearms.

By working with partner agencies, those who have been convicted of gang-related offences are monitored and managed as well as offered support to help them rehabilitate.
