Dogs

Welcome to the West Midlands Police dog pages.  Here you will be able to follow the progress of the latest litter of police dogs going through the police dog training programme.

WMP - new recruits - one

Over the coming months we will take you through from the birth, right up to the point where they become an operational police dog.  You will be able to follow them as they are go through their strength and weakness tests and assessments and follow which ones make it to become fully fledged police dogs and which ones don’t quite make the grade.

The latest batch of puppies born are German Shepherds, from a Czech strain.  They were born in April and are being cared for at the WMP dog unit at Balsall Common.  There are eleven puppies in the litter, 4 male and 7 female.

Training Centre

WMP - new recruits - two

The Dog Training Centre at Balsall Common, Solihull, was opened in 1995 and offers facilities for dogs and handlers which are justifiably recognised as the most modern to be found anywhere in the United Kingdom.

The training centre can offer courses tailored to suit the needs of individual forces or organisations, and staff are happy to offer advice and guidance on a range of dog training or related matters.

The dog kennels have been specifically designed with comfort, hygiene and cleaning in mind.

How to Find Us

Map to the training centre

The Police Dog Training Centre is located approximately 6 miles south east of Birmingham International Airport and the National Exhibition Centre, in the village of Balsall Common.

It is situated in open countryside close to the main A452 which intersects the village. The east coast main line railway runs nearby, the local station being Berkswell which is only one and a half miles away.
