Airport Policing

West Midlands Police has a commitment to Ports Policing.

Ports manifest themselves in various guises, Airports, Seaports, Ferry Ports and includes the Channel Tunnel Terminals. Dependant upon certain criteria appertaining to size and usage each Port is either designated or non-designated.

Designated Ports tend to be the busier ports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Birmingham Interntional etc and are identified in the Terrorism Act 2000.

Non-designated ports therefore tend to be less busy but by no means less important.

By their nature designated ports tend to be permanently manned by either Custom and Excise, Immigration or Police or a combination of all three. This makes policing of non-designated Ports more unpredictable and consequently more difficult to police.

There are local bylaws which apply to certain Ports but our primary powers for Policing Ports are given to us by the Terrorism Act 2000.

How can I help?
