The Safer Travel team have a designated schools presentation team who travel across the West Midlands and give presentations to both junior and secondary schools.

The junior school presentation is an interactive exercise designated to help pupils with the transition to secondary school on the bus network with a focus on anti-social behaviour and personal safety. The secondary school powerpoint presentation places an emphasis on anti social behaviour, general behaviour on the buses and personal safety.

Pupils are encouraged to consider various aspects of their journeys to and from schools along with: -

Road Safety

The team will deliver a short presenatation to the pupils where they are asked to consider;

  1. Waiting at bus stops - being vigilant
  2. Crossing the roads in a safe manner
  3. Bus awareness while crossing the road and consequences
  4. Alighting the vehicle safely

A debate will be encouraged to maximise pupil participation.

Planning their bus journeys to and from school

Consideration will be given by the pupils to the following:

  1. What buses should they use?
  2. The time the buses run
  3. Where it is safe to board the bus

This will be continued through discussion and the use of role play scenarios.

Travelling safely to and from school

Pupils will be encouraged to look at what is expected of them, and what they would want to see on the bus if they were travelling on it, consideration will be given to: -

  1. Pupil behaviour on the bus
  2. Public perception of pupils
  3. Reputation of your school
  4. Personal safety and victim awareness
  5. Reporting incidents safely and the bus monitoring scheme

Consequences and actions of individuals and their behaviour

This part of the lesson will allow pupils to use the information that they have discussed to put into a class role play. This will take the shape of a court based scenario, whereby pupils will look at the consequences of an individual's actions. They will also consider the choices that they had and discuss appropriate action that should have be taken in the same circumstances.

This presenatation falls within the recommeded time from OFSTED and will run for 40 minutes.  The input focuses on developing a healthy, lifestyle and preparing pupils to play an active role as citizens.

The input will also deliver against the Stay Safe elements of the “Every Child Matters” agenda.  The workshop is delivered using a range of methods, as identified in PSHE guidelines:

  1. Presentation
  2. Debates
  3. Role plays
  4. Case studies
  5. Word storming

The input also provides pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding to deal with circumstances such as:

  1. Taking responsibilty
  2. Making real choices and decisions
  3. Developing relationships
  4. Find information and advice
  5. Preparing for change (transition to secondary school and journey planning)
  6. Consider social and moral dilemmas
