Image of nursing home theft suspect released

30 August 2012

DETECTIVES investigating a series of thefts from nursing homes in Sandwell and Walsall have released a CCTV image of a suspect they want to trace.

Police issued an appeal earlier this month after four homes were targeted by a bogus caller, who had claimed to be doing official work.

One inside, he has stole bank cards and cash from staff.

Another three incidents have since taken place and spread to the Dudley area, meaning that there have now been seven incidents that are believed to be linked.

Officers issued a description of a male offender at the time but CCTV enquiries have since uncovered a second female suspect who officers are asking for the public’s help to trace.

The woman was caught on camera using a card which was stolen from one of the homes to withdraw a significant quantity of cash.

Members of the public are being asked to look at the image and contact police if they recognise the woman.

Officers are also asking nursing home staff to be extra vigilant against bogus callers.

Detective Constable Lindsay Marsh, who is investigating the crimes, said: “People are often far too willing to give callers the benefit of the doubt when they come to the door, but you should always ask for identification.

“If you’re in doubt, keep them out – remember you do not have to let anyone into your home if you don’t want to."

Anyone with information should call Sandwell CID on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
