Security alert in Walsall town centre now over

3 May 2012

ROADS IN WALSALL have reopened following a security alert in the town centre earlier this afternoon (Thursday 3 May).

At 3.19pm today, police were called by staff at a bank on The Bridge after a suspicious package was discovered.

Emergency services attended and the area evacuated while specialist officers examined the package.

At around 5.20pm, all cordons were lifted when there was deemed to be no risk to the public.

The matter is now being treated as a hoax and a criminal investigation is now underway. The bank remains cordoned off while a forensic examination of the branch is conducted.

West Midlands Police would like to thank those affected by the incident for their co-operation and calm approach to the evacuation.
