More time to question double murder suspect

8 October 2012

POLICE have been granted more time to question a man arrested on suspicion of the murder of two people at a Walsall block of flats.

Detectives detained the 43-year-old at the scene on Saturday morning, 6 October, after the discovery of two bodies.

A 69-year-old woman was found inside a flat, in Acacia Avenue on the Yew Tree Estate with fatal injuries whilst the body of a man, believed to be in his 40s, was discovered by officers on ground behind the apartments.

The suspect remains in police custody this morning, helping the police investigation, after a Magistrate’s extension was granted yesterday.

Police forensics teams continue to work at the scene and a cordon will remain in place outside the flats today whilst further enquiries are carried out in the area.

Investigating officer, Detective Inspector Warren Hines, said: "We are not seeking anybody else at this stage in connection with the deaths...we believe all the parties involved were known to each other.

“We urge anyone with information which may help our investigation to come forward at the earliest opportunity.”

Forensic post mortem examinations were due to be conducted late on Sunday to determine how the man and woman died.

The victims' families are being supported by specially trained liaison officers at this time.

Anyone with information to help the police inquiry should call Force CID at Harborne by dialling 101, or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
