Action - community priorities

The priorities for Broad Street and Entertainment area neighbourhood are:

  1. Anti-social behaviour
Anti-social behaviour associated with the areas surrounding the canal towpaths including damage, noise, drug use, jumping on boats and theft from boats.

Targetting anti-social behaviour and drinking in the alcohol restricted area in the Commercial Street/Washington Street area.
  2. Road safety
Road safety associated with Broad St, Commercial St and Sherbourne St.

Officers conducted a Drink drive operation on Broad Street during June, where 20 HORTs, 5 fixed penalty notices and 10 VDRS were issued. Also one person was arrested for possession of cannabis and three drivers were breathalysed.
  3. Safety issues regarding taxis on Broad St
  4. Checking doorstaff
The officers visited all bars on Broad Street to ensure that all the door staff were registered and their SIA badges were checked. During their checks, two offences were disclosed and both were reported to the SIA and sent home, they can no longer work on the doors.
  5. Targetting beggers
The neighbourhood team have been able to get another five interim ASBOs to address the begging problems on Broad Street. (12.01.09).

Answers - feedback and solutions

The following are the issues raised from our last neighbourhood meeting and what we are doing to tackle them:

  • Illegal parking
Police Community Support Officers have been targeting illegal parking on Ryland Street and Sherbourne Street. This parking was causing obstruction to residents, businesses and the emergency services. Numerous penalty notices have been issued and an improvement has been noted.
  • Anti-social behaviour
Increased patrols have occurred in the areas identified for anti-social behaviour around the Post Box and Civic Close.
  • Taxis
In partnership with Birmingham City Council Street Wardens, many taxis have been reported for illegal U-turns and parking outside of ranks. A new taxi access scheme is under consideration.
  • Drug Use on Broad Street
As part of the National Tackling Drugs week, officers from the Broad Street neighbourhood team used a drug itemiser at Gatecrasher and tested 75 people for illegal substances. Out these 75 people, 21 tested positive and were subjected to a search under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
  • Community Engagment
As part of the 'Youth 4 Em' initiative, officers from the neighbourhood team have been taking part in football matches with year 6 from St Chads School and talking to about knife crime.
