Security and Partnerships Officers
Hello and welcome to the webpage for the Birmingham West and Central security and partnerships officers.
We are Sergeant Steve Pursglove, PC Jo Spencer, PC Mohammed Najib and PC Dave Painter and our role is to deter and tackle terrorism and violent extremism by building strong relationships within our local communities.
We work in Nechells, Birmingham as part of the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit. We have colleagues doing similar roles across the West Midlands region.
Counter terrorism policing has changed a great deal in recent years. We are still focussed on tracking possible terrorists and bringing them to justice, but we now also devote considerable time and resources into trying to prevent people from becoming involved in terrorism in the first place.
This area of work is known as PREVENT and is something we are heavily involved in.
The police service recognises that if we are to defeat terrorism, the whole community needs to play a part. We need to build trust with our communities and understand their needs and experiences. Getting people from different backgrounds to work together and understand one another is vital in building a safer city.
Terrorism is no different to any other sort of violent crime. If you suspect something, you should report it. If you feel criminals may be influencing someone, you should help put a stop to it.
Vulnerable people can get drawn into criminal activity. Police and partner agencies including the council, education authorities, religious organisations etc can all help steer vulnerable people away from potential criminal behaviour.
You will no doubt be familiar with the concept of neighbourhood policing. Our role works on all the same principles: trust, understanding and co-operation. In order to do our job, we need to have a good picture of what is going on in this area. People like you can help us create that picture.
If you have information or concerns that you would like to discuss, please let us know. We would rather you contact us and it turn out to be nothing at all than risk missing something important.
We fully appreciate that this is a sensitive area of policing and we assure you any calls will be handled delicately and discreetly.
Prevention is our watch word. Together we can help keep communities safe from those who wish to cause division and harm.
If you would like to get in touch, please contact us on 101 and ask for the Birmingham Security and Partnerships Team.
Alternatively, please call the national confidential Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321.
Always dial 999 in case of emergency.
