How to get involved

Our neighbourhood policing teams are working hard to ensure that your personal concerns about the area you live are identified and acted upon quickly, and that you are frequently given positive and useful feedback about the action we have taken.

We would love to hear from you about any issues you think the police should be tackling in your community. There are lots of ways you can do this, by attending one of the meetings held regularly in your community, by calling or emailing the team or you could simply stop one an officer in the street and have a chat.

You could even get involved with Neighbourhood Watch that is currently running all over the Birmingham South. Neighbourhood Watch schemes are used to inspire trust and confidence, prevent crime and the fear of crime, encourage community spirit, forge closer links with the police and encourage residents to report suspicious activity or incidents to the police through the appropriate channels.

You can also get involved with your community by joining the Key Individual Network (KIN) which is a localised group of active community members who are keen to improve their neighbourhood. For us at West Midlands Police, these individuals provide us with intelligence (activity relating to crime and disorder) in their neighbourhoods that we can act upon and subsequently make your community a safer place to live, work and visit. In addition to this, we will inform you of current crime trends, crime reduction campaigns and up to date information about crime and disorder in your area that you will be required to spread among your community. To become a member of the KIN you should contact our Communications and Reassurance officer, Janine Wright on 0845 113 5000 ext 7822 6028.

Neighbourhood Watch schemes are a voluntary and require a limited input from the nominated committee members who are in contact with the police to provide assistance and information relating to crime in your area. Along with advice on how to be vigilant, noticing suspicious behaviour for you to report and create a safer local environment for you and your community.

If you would like to get involved in this proven to be effective scheme of combating crime please contact our Community Partnerships officer, Claire Wood on 0845 113 5000 ext 7822 6024.

With this two way approach to crime reduction we have found that crime falls as a result of the support from community members who form part of the KIN (Key Individual Network) and Neighbourhood Watch, so get involved and improve your community.

Priorities

  1. Anti-social behaviour on Pershore Road at the corner of Dogpool Lane
Attendees at the Selly Park Residents group in June reported that groups of people are congregating outside the front of Megabites fast food shop, Pershore Road at the corner of Dogpool Lane. Concerns about this area were also raised at the Tasking Meeting at St. Stephens church in June. The groups normally gather late afternoon into evening time. Customers have told us that the groups are being loud, are consuming alcohol and are intimidating them as they enter the shops. In addition, local people have also stated that some members of the group may be selling drugs outside the premises.

  2. Illegal road manoeuvres around the Bristol road area
During July, concerned members of the community contacted us to say that vehicles are making illegal road manoeuvres in the area around the Bristol Road. It appears that there are two main locations where this is becoming a problem, especially during rush hour traffic. It involves vehicles using Dog Pool Lane turning right into Manilla Road, and also vehicles turning left on the Pershore Road into Hobson Road. Both of these locations clearly display ''no right turn'' and ''no left turn'' signs respectively. Vehicle owners are using these routes as a short cut to avoid traffic on the Pe

  3. Various issues on Milner Road
Throughout July, residents from Milner Road have contacted us to report several problems in the road. Firstly local people were upset by the amount of rubbish and litter being dumped in the street. This rubbish is blocking pavements and is very unhygienic for local residents. In addition, there were also concerns about speeding vehicles on the road that are creating a real danger for local people. Finally we have received several complaints about an ice cream van that is playing its jingle late in the evening. The music is being played up to 9pm and is waking children up who are asleep.

  4. Anti-social behaviour outside public houses
Attendees at the neighbourhood tasking meeting during July raised several concerns about issues of anti-social behaviour taking place after closing time at the Weoley Avenue Members Club and the Bear and Staff public house. The concerns centred around the fact that at closing time customers are leaving the premises and are acting in a rowdy manor, including making excess noise, smashing glasses and fighting. This behaviour is disturbing local residents.

Feedback and solutions

  1. Anti-social behaviour on Pershore Road at the corner of Dogpool Lane
As a response to community concerns we have increased our patrols around the affected area at the key times that the anti-social behaviour is taking place. During these patrols we have spoken to, and taken the names of several young people and advised them on their behaviour. We have also spoken to their parents and school teachers to ensure that the message is consistent that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. We are pleased to say that this has had a positive impact on the area, however we are continuing our operations in this area to make sure that the improvement continues.
  2. Illegal road manoeuvres around the Bristol road area
Following the communities concerns in relation to dangerous and illegal road manoeuvres, we issued a letter to all local residents explaining the problem and that we would be patrolling the affected roads to issues fixed penalty notices to those who continue to break the law. It appears that this letter has had a positive affect, however we will continue our patrols for the foreseeable future to ensure that the problem does not return.
  3. Various issues on Milner Road
Following the concerns raised by the community, the team has dealt with each of the issues separately. In relation to the litter problems, our team are going to carry out a joint visit along with environmental health to the shops on the road, advising them that the dumping of litter is unacceptable. The litter that is currently on the road will also be cleared up. Another concern for residents was that of speeding vehicles. As a result of this we have placed down traffic data lines for a three week period, which will tell us how often vehicles are speeding. The results of this survey will be fed back to the community. Finally, officers have spoken to the owner of the ice cream van to advise him that he should not play his music late at night.
  4. Anti-social behaviour outside public houses
In relation to residents concerns about anti-social behaviour around the Weoley Avenue Members Club and the Bear and Staff public house. Our team have planned to meet with the licensees to explain the problems and the impact that it is having on local people. From this we hope to be able to provide a long term solution. An update will follow as soon as the meetings have taken place.
