Scrap yard cordoned off after body found at scene of fire
18 April 2012
POLICE have sealed off a salvage yard in Erdington this morning, after a person was found dead following a car fire.
West Midlands Fire Service alerted police to the incident at the site on Gravelly Lane at 11.54pm after crews were called out to the yard, where a small number of cars were alight.
After further examination of the scene, a body was found inside one of the cars which had been on fire. The person was confirmed dead at the scene.
The yard has been cordoned off and forensic examinations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.
A post mortem will be conducted later today to determine a cause of death and further information relating to the deceased. The person is yet to be identified.
Detective sergeant Andy Bradley, from Force CID, said this morning: "We are at the early stages of our inquiry and the death is being treated as unexplained as we try to determine how the person died, and the fire began.
"We are urging anyone with information about last night's events to come forward and speak to us at their earliest opportunity."
Police were in the area last night speaking to residents and conducting enquiries at the scene. Officers will again be in the area today speaking to local police and conducting forensic enquiries.
Gravelly Lane between Station Road and the railway bridge remains closed at present.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Force Criminal Investigation Department by dialling 101, or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
