Take two minutes to reduce your chance of becoming a victim

27 February 2012

IF you've got two minutes to spare, police are asking you to watch a video that could save you a great deal of distress in the future.

The short, informative film gives 10 quick tips about how to secure your home, in less than two minutes. The video is designed to grab and hold the viewer's attention and get important information across in a 'quick-fire' style.

In conjunction with the advice video, West Midlands Police has released the latest burglary figures which show that there have been 3,000 fewer victims this year, compared with the same period last year.

Chief Inspector Darren Walsh said: "The latest positive burglary figures reflect how hard officers have worked and how our communities have listened to their advice, making their properties more secure by following basic advice.

"This video will hopefully continue to get the crime reduction message out to people across the West Midlands. We will continue to focus on reducing the numbers of burglaries as well as maintaining a relentless focus on those who cause harm to our communities.

"In the same way that we need our communities to follow the top 10 tips, we also need them to tell us if they know of anyone committing these crimes. If anyone has any information or would like to speak to police, please use the non-emergency number 101 or you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111."

The top 10 tips as featured in the video are:

1. Lock your windows and doors
2. Don't leave keys and valuables on view
3. Use good quality door locks
4. Lock valuables away
5. Use timer switches and false TVs
6. Use an alarm
7. Mark your property with UV or DNA marker fluid
8. Lock outdoor equipment away
9. Plant harsh, spiky plants
10. Lock your ladders away
