Welcome to Birmingham North Local Policing Unit

Supt Richard YoudI’d like to begin my latest message by congratulating everyone who took part in the Great Midlands Fun Run. I’m sure the race, and in particular the finish line, has been eagerly anticipated by the 7,000 strong field for the last few weeks of training.

In addition to the runners there are a number of people who deserve a mention. First I’m told the crowd cheering the runners along the 8.5 mile course was record breaking this year and I’m sure their support was welcomed by the runners.

Credit for this must go to the event organisers and everyone who has worked behind the scenes, and I’m sure the work for next year’s event has already started. There were a number of officers not only lining the route but also taking part in their free time and everyone I’ve spoken to said everyone did Sutton Coldfield proud.

And it was this determination and community spirit I’d like to encourage local communities to continue and help make our communities safer − without the need for months of training or pain of conquering ‘Cardiac Hill.’

It could be as simple as following some simple crime prevention advice to reduce opportunist crime this summer, it could be picking up the phone to report suspicious behaviour, or by joining your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

Some of the younger members of our local community have already been leading by example when they gave up a couple of hours of their school holiday to join local officers carrying out a community speedwatch operation. They got to see first-hand the work of officers and how we are responding to concerns about speeding.

In recent weeks Operation Splinter, an ongoing operation to tackle community concerns about drug use, reached a milestone as the value of drugs seized and destroyed passed the £250,000 mark. Information used to execute a number of warrants has come from the public.

These are just two examples of work be carried out so if you have concerns about drugs, speeding or anything else please get in touch so we can continue to achieve similar results. You can really influence our work and the information you provide can be vital in supporting our work.

The areas where you live, work, your children go to school and every other area across the West Midlands you visit all have a dedicated policing team responding to local concerns. So please take five minutes to visit the team’s web pages to find out more.

We’ll continue to keep you updated about the work we’re carrying out so please get in touch to find out how you can support us. Thank you.

Superintendent Richard Youds
