NEIGHBOURS CHEER AS POLICE ARREST SUSPECTED DRUG DEALERS

NEIGHBOURS and shopkeepers came out of their homes and onto the street to congratulate police as they arrested five suspected drug dealers.
The support came as officers in Digbeth raided two commercial properties to seize a substantial quantity of drugs and arrest five men.
The raids were the result of concerns from people in the community who had alerted their neighbourhood police officers about drug dealers.
Around 60 people gathered to condemn the suspected dealers as they were led into police vans after the swoop in Horton Square, Highgate.
Two men were later charged with possession with intent to supply cocaine and cannabis.
Eye witnesses said neighbours shouted at the men as they were led away.
Police also seized cash and other assets in the raids.
Insp Andy Bridgewater, from the Digbeth neighbourhood team, said: "We had a number of complaints from people in the area that there was drug dealing going on.
"As a result we investigated and acted on the information and that in turn led to these arrests."
Police were delighted with the reaction of the community, who said they were pleased to be 'getting their street back'.
Owners and staff at the commercial properties which were raided were not connected with any of the arrests.
Insp Bridgewater said: "Their response was really encouraging and will only cement further the relationship we are developing with them.
"It is important that when people come to us with information we act on it to continue disrupting the illegal flow of drugs through convictions."
He urged anyone with more information to contact him on 0845 1113 5000 or the confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111.
And he warned: "In the meantime I have dedicated neighbourhood officers patrolling the area to further reassure the public that drug related crime will not be tolerated."
