Three men jailed for Coventry rape

A group of men who repeatedly raped a woman in Coventry, subjecting her to a horrific ordeal have been jailed.

The court heard how Calin Lacatus, aged 27 of Shacklewell,London, Constantin Vila, aged 27 of Foleshill and Timotei Baran, aged 20 also of Foleshill, sexually assaulted a woman following a night out in Coventry.

The 31-year-old woman had been enjoying a night out when she struck up a conversation with Lacatus outside the Grosvenor Casino on Phoenix Way on 26 January 2016.

He offered to give her a lift home but when she got inside his car he told her that he needed to wait for his friends to arrive before they left.

However, when his friends arrived they took the woman to a secluded location and subjected her to a terrifying and sustained attack. After a number of hours she managed to escape and called a friend who came to her rescue.

Lacatus had fled to London following the attack and was arrested several days later, he denied the assault in interview saying that the woman had consented.

But a jury saw through his lies and convicted him at Warwick Justice Centre today (19 May).

Baran and Vila attempted to flee the country and were arrested by officers in Kent. The court also found Baran and Vila guilty of rape and sexual assault.

Lacatus was jailed for 10 years, Vila for 8 years and Baran for 9 years. (picured left to right respectively)

Investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Adam Williams, said: “This was a particularly distressing case and the victim was put through a truly horrifying ordeal.

“We commend her bravery for coming forward and for having the fortitude to see the case through to the end. It must have been distressing for her to relive her attack in court, but she did so with honour and integrity.

“She felt that this man was showing her some kindness but in fact he was a predator who used this opportunity to exploit and attack her, along with his friends.

“We hope that today’s sentence brings some comfort to the woman who still continues to recover from the assault.

“We have specially trained officers who can help anyone who has been a victim of sexual assault they can offer a wealth of advice. We also work with a raft of other agencies who can offer specialist support through every step of the criminal justice process."
