Police inspectors pleased with WMP’s ‘public first’ approach

Inspectors assessing the ethics and culture of UK police forces have concluded West Midlands Police understands the communities it serves, grasps the public’s concerns, and treats people fairly. 

Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary (HMIC) examined the force’s neighbourhood policing reach, how it speaks to the public, call handling and complaints procedure − and rated it ‘Good’ overall.

Bus passenger may have seen fatal hit and run

Police investigating a fatal hit and run in Coventry believe a woman waiting at a bus-stop near the crash scene could hold vital clues - and are appealing for her to come forward.

It follows a crash at the junction of Dame Agnes Grove and Henley Road at around 1pm on Saturday 30 January in which a 56-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured. Christopher Masterson later died in hospital.

Birmingham man jailed for causing the deaths of two sisters in Handsworth collision

A Birmingham man has been jailed for four years for causing the death of two sisters as they crossed a Handsworth road last year. 
  
Michael Junior, aged 35 from Copthall Road, Handsworth was sentenced today (Thursday 11 February) after pleading guilty on Tuesday to causing the deaths of Lily and Shelly Xin Wu, aged 7 and 6, by dangerous driving and for causing serious injury to their 39-year-old mother, 13-year-old brother and 12-year-old sister.

Student to appear before court accused of copycat college bomb hoax

Police have charged a man in connection with a hoax bomb threat made to a college in Sandwell. 

Scott McLaughlin, 20, from Cavendish Road, Edgbaston in Birmingham was arrested by officers on Wednesday (10 February) − the same day as the threats were made.

Robbery rates tumble in Coventry as #OpBlueSteel roots out criminals

Robbery rates in Coventry have tumbled in the last year as a crackdown on organised crime nets offenders and gets under the skin of gang members. 

Latest figures show a near 16 per cent reduction in robbery – including armed shop attacks – with 76 fewer incidents since last April compared to the same period a year ago..
