How will I know if I have to register?

If your visa says “Police Registration within 7 days of arrival” or “Report extension to the Police” you must attend the office within 7 days to register.

Students from the following countries are required by the Home Office to register with the Police.

Why do I have to register with the Police?

The Immigration Regulation Act 1972 (Registration with the Police) is a legal requirement made by the Home Office. Failure to register with the Police is a criminal offence and could lead to prosecution.

The office is closed on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays.

What documents do I need for a first time registration?

  • Passport
  • £34 (£50 notes will not be accepted)
  • 2 Passport sized photographs
  • Confirmation of your University/College
  • Work Permit
  • Confirmation of your address (contract, bill, bank statement)

You will also need to print off this form, complete it and bring it with you to the office.

Once you have registered, you will need to report any changes to the Police (see below)

I have already registered with the Police, what do I need to report?

Once you have registered you must inform the Police of any changes within 7 days. These changes include:

  • Change of address
  • Change of employment/University/College or course
  • Visa extension
  • New Passport
  • Change of marital status

To report any of these changes you must attend the office with your Passport, Police Registration Certificate and proof (bill, bank statement, letter from University etc)

I have already registered with the Police in another city; do I need to register again?

If you have registered with the Police in another city and now live in the West Midlands area you are required to report to the Police. You will need to attend the office with:

  • Your passport
  • Your Police Registration Certificate
  • 2 passport sized photographs
  • Confirmation of your University/college
  • Work Permit
  • Confirmation of your address

You will also need to print off this form, complete it and bring it with you to the office.

You will not need to pay again if you have already registered with the Police

I am moving from the West Midlands to another area; what do I need to do?

If you are moving from the West Midlands area to another area you will need to contact our office before you leave and then register at your local Overseas Visitors Registration Office.

I am leaving the UK; do I need to report to the Police?

If you are leaving the UK for more than 2 months you must inform the Police of when you will depart and the date that you will return. If you are leaving the UK permanently you must return your Police Registration Certificate to the address below, with your departure date and airport.
