Custody Officers

1 Training Requirements

1.1 The custody officer course consists of three modules; law and procedure; ICIS / PNC and first aid and Health and Safety. Sergeants can either complete all three modules together, or individual modules as necessary.

1.2 Prior to undertaking duties as a custody officer, sergeants must be trained in the use of ICIS, law and procedure and First Aid at work. Where a relief, or additional custody officer is required, a sergeant may perform the duties of a custody officer if they are trained in the use of ICIS and law and procedure and there is an additional person present who has been trained as a First Aider at work.

1.3 A one-day custody officer development day is available as a refresher to officers who have been previously trained, but may not have performed custody duties for some time. Trained officers should be allowed to shadow custody officers if they feel they are losing their skills through lack of practice, and are encouraged to cover refreshment breaks to maintain their expertise.

1.4 There is a mandatory requirement for officers trained as First Aiders at work, to be refreshed every three years. A two-day course is available for this.

2 Tenure

Due to the volume of training delivered officers will complete a minimum of 12 months in post as a custody sergeant.
