Alcohol Related Violence

You are on a night out – your mate drinks too much then someone spills their drink, before you know it a fight has broken out and your mate faces being arrested, while someone else has got hurt.

Excessive drinking can easily lead to violence and other situations that can be difficult to control.  In fact it has been estimated that 47 per cent of violent crimes are committed while the offender is under the influence of alcohol.

This site gives you some practical advice on how you can do your bit to avoid becoming a victim.

Safer drinking tips

The West Midlands is a great place to spend a night out and has a wealth of clubs and bars.
Before you go out, it’s important that you take a few simple measures to help ensure you have a great night out and you and your friends get home easily and safely. 

Here are some top tips for a great night out:

  • Pre-book a taxi home
  • Find out the times of the last train, metro and bus
  • Never walk home alone – stick with your mates
  • Carry a personal attack alarm
  • Walk in a well-lit area
  • Don’t be flash with your cash
  • Never leave your drink unattended
  • Avoid any confrontations and walk away

If you are a victim

If you are a victim or a witness to an incident involving violence, it is vital that you call the police. We will treat your call as a priority and will respond immediately if the incident is recent or if the offender is nearby.

Our first priority will be to deal with anyone who is a victim and ensure they are treated. It is important that you provide officers with full details of what you saw and any descriptions of those involved. We will take a written statement from you to help us identify and arrest the offender/s.

Should an offender be prosecuted we will ensure that adequate safeguards are in place to protect you if you are a victim or witness.
