How do I make a complaint against the police?

Telling us about your dissatisfaction helps us to see where and why we have failed to meet your expectations. This allows us to examine how we can improve on the service that we provide.
There are a number of ways that you can make a complaint against police:

  • Visit or telephone the police station (click here to find your local police station) which has responsibility for the member of staff or service with whom you are dissatisfied. This will probably be your local station. It is important that you have the opportunity to firstly discuss your concerns with your local officers and allow them the chance to put things right.
  • Contact the West Midlands Police Professional Standards Department by calling 101 or write to:
    Professional Standards Department,
    West Midlands Police,
    Lloyd House,
    Colmore Circus Queensway
    Birmingham,
    B4 6NQ
  • You can click here to tell us about it by completing the online complaint form.
  • Contact a Solicitor or Member of Parliament to act on your behalf, or nominate someone to put forward your complaint (friend or neighbour) as long as they have a letter from you authorising them to do so.
  • Contact the Independent Police Complaints Commission. (Complaints made to the IPCC will normally be forwarded directly to the relevant police force, unless there are exceptional circumstances.)

    Telephone 0300 020 0096
Lines are staffed between 09.00 and 17.00 hours Monday to Friday
