Command Team

Deputy Chief Constable
Dave Thompson

DCC Thompson

West Midlands Police welcomed its new Deputy Chief Constable, Dave Thompson, to the force at the end of June 2010.

An Assistant Chief Constable at Greater Manchester Police since 2007, Mr Thompson brings over 20 years of varied policing experience to his new role.
From 1999-2003 he led the policing of east Manchester and played a key part in the policing of the 2002 Commonwealth Games before becoming head of GMP’s Specialist Operations Branch. He spent three years as divisional commander for the south Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan divisions, then as ACC Security he was responsible for counter terrorism, strategic partnerships and operational IT strategy.

As WMP’s new Deputy Chief Constable, Mr Thompson’s role is to support the Chief Constable and command team in delivering the force’s vision and change programme.

He ensures the day to day operational challenges of a busy metropolitan force are met and challenges the force to achieve its performance potential in terms of improving public trust and confidence and protecting the public.

He also works with the Police Authority and ensures this relationship remains effective in maintaining the force’s accountability.

Mr Thompson said: “Having spent my entire policing career at GMP, it was time for a change and I am excited about moving to a new force, with new challenges and new communities.

“I hope to bring some new perspectives to WMP. Greater Manchester is West Midland’s most similar force and so there are many common challenges, but often quite different approaches to solving them.

“I have been really impressed with lots of things I have seen already at WMP. I have been following the partnership work around gun crime. I have also been struck by the enthusiasm of all the staff I have met about a new approach to policing that puts the public first.”
