Gareth Cann, known as Gary, was born near High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. He attended the University of Birmingham between 1986-9, studying Medieval and Modern History. On completing his studies Gary stayed in the Midlands, joining West Midlands Police in 1989.
Gary started his career as a beat constable in Birmingham city centre and since that time has served in various ranks and roles in the force. His last posting prior to promotion was as commander at Wolverhampton West in June 2003.
This was followed by his strategic role as head of a specialised “Futures Team” tasked with identifying the factors that will shape future policing.
His varied experience within West Midlands Police has provided many opportunities and much enjoyment. He has broad experience of operational planning and command in a range of scenarios and disciplines and has led for the force on the effort to combat alcohol-related violent crime.
He has held various positions within local community safety partnerships and has been a member of a National School of Government consortium to study risk and innovation in the public sector.
He was appointed to the post of assistant chief constable in March 2007
