Gareth Cann, known as Gary, is the Assistant Chief Constable responsible for operations for the force. His portfolio includes responsibility for the central motorway policing group, criminal justice and professional standards department. He also oversees the Sandwell and Dudley local policing units.
He joined West Midlands Police in 1989 and started his career as a beat constable in Birmingham city centre. Since that time has served in various ranks and roles in the force. His varied experience within West Midlands Police has provided many opportunities and much enjoyment.
His last posting prior to promotion to Assistant Chief Constable was as commander for Wolverhampton in 2003. He was promoted to ACC in April 2007 taking responsibility for Local Policing, moved to Crime in June 2009 and now takes the Operations role with effect from April 2013.
